Scott Darland - The Wood Samaritan
My name is Scott Darland and I've lived in Southern Oregon my entire life. I've been in emergency services for over twenty-five years and been doing it for a living for fifteen. I work full-time as a paramedic for our local ambulance service. I discovered woodworking several years ago as a way to cope with the rigors of the paramedic life.

Handmade, Vintage Tools, DovetailsThere's nothing like the feel and the sound of a freshly sharpened hand tool as it glides through the wood. I prefer to do most of my woodworking with traditional hand tools. I'm always on the lookout for Stanley planes or Disston hand saws at antique stores and garage sales. I own several power tools, and on occasion use them for repetitive cuts, but the majority of my work is done by hand. All of my joinery is done by hand, no router jigs. I'm not opposed to the use of jigs or those who use them to perfection, it's just my preference. I told myself, when I decided to learn the craft, I needed to learn how to do it by hand first. I'm still learning, as are the true woodworking masters.
I get a portion of my rough-cut wood stock from our local, privately owned, saw mills. The rest I get from the Oregon coast. There is a literal treasure trove of driftwood. I love scavenging for Myrtle, Alder, Oak, Maple, Redwood, Cedar, Pine, Fir, Walnut, what ever I can find. I bring it home and mill it myself. The satisfaction I get from taking a piece of drift-wood, milling it into boards and then turning it into something beautiful is indescribable. |
TESTIMONIAL |
Scott, The Wood Samaritan, made me a beautiful jewelry box that was breath-taking. His artistry and detailed hand-carving makes it beautiful and heirloom worthy. I am so excited to show my friends. Jennifer
Scott built my wife a step stool for her tall bed. When I saw it I thought it was handcrafted with no nails or hardware. It is functional and beautiful. I ordered three more, one for MY side of the bed and two more for foot rests in the living room. Our guest all want one now. - Lou
